Explore Florida’s Hidden Gems Beyond the Theme Parks
As devoted Florida enthusiasts, Luke and I have always felt an undeniable connection to the Sunshine State. Every time we land in Florida, there’s this comforting warmth that envelops us, almost like stepping into a home away from home. The friendly people, the charming atmosphere, and the rich culture make this place incredibly special—a destination we find ourselves yearning to return to time and again.

When most people in the UK think of Florida, their minds immediately conjure images of roller coasters, theme parks, and the bustling attractions of Orlando. While these iconic attractions have their own allure, we’ve discovered an entirely different side of Florida. Having honeymooned here and visited multiple times, we thought we had seen a fair bit of what the state had to offer. But this trip, with the invaluable help of Visit Florida Tourism, revealed just how much more there was to explore. We realised we hadn’t even begun to scratch the surface.
Our journey through Florida’s Space Coast, Ocala, and Anna Maria Island unveiled hidden gems brimming with natural beauty, unique adventures, and incredible culinary experiences. Here’s how we redefined what a Florida getaway can be, and we hope you’ll use our itinerary to create your own special Florida memories.
Key Locations We Visited in Florida
Our Florida adventure took us to a range of incredible destinations, each offering its own charm and surprises. Here’s where we visited:
Located just 45 minutes east of Orlando, the Space Coast is a destination perfect for families and adventure seekers alike. With iconic locations like Cocoa Beach, the region boasts 72 miles of pristine beaches and an ecologically rich environment. It’s also home to the world-renowned Kennedy Space Center, where visitors can experience the thrill of space exploration and watch rockets soar into orbit. The area’s wildlife, including sea turtles, adds another layer of magic to this already dynamic destination.
Where we stayed: Hilton Garden Inn Cocoa Beach-Oceanfront & Courtyard By Marriott Titusville Kennedy Space Center
Ocala and the surrounding Marion County area are Florida’s hidden gems, known for their lush springs, vast forests, and equestrian culture. This charming region offers outdoor adventures, quaint small towns, and warm, welcoming communities. From exploring the World Equestrian Center to enjoying the area’s natural beauty, Ocala truly surprised us with its unique blend of activities and peaceful surroundings.
Where we stayed: The Equestrian Hotel
Bradenton and Anna Maria Island
Nestled along the Gulf Coast, Bradenton and Anna Maria Island provided the perfect escape. The island’s white sandy beaches and turquoise waters are ideal for relaxing, while the vibrant local culture of Downtown Bradenton offers shopping, dining, and history. Whether enjoying the eco-friendly beaches of Anna Maria Island or exploring Bradenton’s hidden gems, this area made for a truly memorable part of our trip.

Day 1: Cocoa Beach – Ocean Views and Laid-Back Vibes
We embarked on our adventure at Cocoa Beach, where we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Cocoa Beach Oceanfront. From the moment we stepped onto our balcony, we were captivated by the sight and sound of the ocean. After settling in, we indulged in a peaceful walk along the beach, allowing the gentle sea breeze to set the tone for our trip.
That evening, we made our way to the Sunset Cafe Waterfront Bar and Grill, where we enjoyed a refreshing drink while listening to live music. Watching the sun dip below the horizon, we soaked in the relaxed, waterfront atmosphere. Afterwards, we satisfied our appetites at Big Daddy J’s 5 Great Things, where the menu’s star attraction was the mouth-watering beef brisket.
To conclude the evening, we explored the iconic Ron Jon Surf Shop, a sprawling treasure trove of all things surf and beach. It’s a must-visit spot that perfectly captures the laid-back Cocoa Beach vibe.
Day 2: Wildlife Encounters and Space Adventures
Our second day began with a visit to the Brevard Zoo, where we embarked on their unique kayaking experience. Paddling through lush waterways, we were thrilled to spot giraffes and rhinos—an incredible way to get up close with wildlife. The zoo is thoughtfully mapped out by zones based on species and continents. Walking through one enclosure, we were amazed to see families of kangaroos, which was an incredible experience. The zoo’s dedication to conservation left a lasting impression on both of us.
In the afternoon, we headed to the Kennedy Space Center, eager to immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of space exploration. We kicked off our visit with the Rocket Garden, marveling at the historic rockets that symbolise humanity’s journey beyond Earth. Next, we explored the IMAX theatre, where we watched awe-inspiring space documentaries on a giant screen. Seeing the breathtaking visuals of Earth from space and learning about life aboard the International Space Station was really educational.
The Shuttle Launch Experience was another highlight, providing us with a hands-on sense of what it’s like to launch into space. We absolutely loved the VR experiences, especially HYPERDECK where we went on a mission to the moon, complete with multi-sensory effects. A thrilling and immersive way to end the day.
After an action-packed afternoon, we checked into the Courtyard by Marriott Titusville and enjoyed dinner at their Space Bar Rooftop, which offered stunning views and delicious food, making for a perfect conclusion to our space-themed adventures.
Day 3: Out of This World
Our third day took us back to the Kennedy Space Center, ready to uncover even more of its remarkable exhibits. We began at the Apollo/Saturn V Center, standing in awe under the gigantic Saturn V rocket. Walking through the Apollo mission displays was deeply humbling, making us reflect on the extraordinary bravery and innovation behind these space achievements.
A standout moment of the day was the “Chat with an Astronaut” session, where we had the unique opportunity to meet a real-life astronaut. Listening to their fascinating stories about life in space was captivating. As a bonus, we received a collectible coin and a signed photo of the astronaut, keepsakes we’ll cherish forever.
Later, we experienced the sheer thrill of watching SpaceX rocket launches. Witnessing two launches from different viewpoints added to the excitement, with each perspective offering something special. The roaring engines, fiery trails, and collective excitement of the crowd made these moments unforgettable.
To round off our cosmic day, we returned to the Courtyard by Marriott Titusville, located just minutes from the Space Center. Our room had a spaceman light that projected enchanting stars onto the ceiling, making it feel as though we were sleeping on another planet. It was a magical end to a day filled with space exploration.
Day 4: Ocala Adrenaline-Fuelled Adventure & Downtown Charm
Leaving the Space Coast behind, we headed to Ocala, where our first stop was the Canyons Zip Line and Adventure Park. This heart-pounding experience featured Florida’s longest and fastest zip line, soaring over stunning canyons and shimmering waters. Even though Luke typically avoids heights, the breathtaking views and the professional, safety-focused team made it a thrilling and unforgettable adventure for both of us.
Ocala is known as the horse capital of the world, so next we checked into The Equestrian Hotel at the World Equestrian Center. This luxurious spot offered the rare treat of watching equestrian events right from our room.
That evening, we dined at District Bar and Kitchen in downtown Ocala. I savoured creamy mac and cheese, while Luke enjoyed their famous smash burger. The lively rooftop ambiance made for the perfect end to our day. After dinner, we took a magical stroll downtown, where festive lights sparkled, and the Christmas tree setup was underway. It truly felt like stepping into a Hallmark movie.
Day 5: A Perfect Day in Ocala: Exploring Rainbow River, Silver Springs and The World Equestrian Center
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Emma’s Patisserie, tucked inside the hotel. As soon as we stepped into the charming café, we were transported to a world of French pastries, freshly baked macarons, and the aroma of rich coffee. The ambience was so elegant, with old-world charm that made it the perfect setting to start our day. We couldn’t resist trying the French macarons and a cup of espresso—they were divine! Whether you’re stopping by for a quick breakfast or a midday treat, Emma’s Patisserie is a must-visit spot.
After breakfast, we headed to KP Hole Park for a kayaking adventure on the stunning Rainbow River. The park, located in Dunnellon, is known for its crystal-clear waters that stay a cool 72 degrees all year round. We were given two single kayaks to explore the river, and it was such a peaceful experience. As we paddled along, we were surrounded by beautiful wildlife, including birds, turtles, and even the occasional otter! If you’re looking for a more secluded spot, we highly recommend turning right about 5-10 minutes up the river, where there’s a great canal-type trail that people love to explore. It was a fantastic way to connect with nature, and we couldn’t have asked for a better morning on the water. One thing to note: make sure to bring your refillable water bottles as disposable containers aren’t allowed on the river.
After all that paddling, we were ready for some lunch. We headed over to Swampy’s Bar & Grille, which sits right on the Rainbow River. This place is like stepping into the heart of the Louisiana Bayou with its Cajun-inspired menu. We indulged in some seriously tasty dishes, including the Po Boy and red beans and rice. It was the perfect fuel after our morning kayak! The restaurant had such a laid-back, welcoming vibe, and we enjoyed sitting by the river as we ate.
Next up, we headed to Silver Springs State Park to kayak. Silver Springs is one of Florida’s largest and most iconic springs, pumping out over 500 million gallons of water daily. We took a peaceful ride down the five-mile Silver River. The view was incredible, and we got up close with Florida’s diverse wildlife, including birds, turtles, and all kinds of fish. We also had some time to explore the park and browse the cute gift shop. Pro tip: Pre-book your tickets online to save time.
Next, we headed to The World Equestrian Center (WEC). We had a guided tour of the massive complex. The WEC is unlike anything we’ve ever seen—it’s the largest equestrian facility in the country, with stunning architecture, temperature-controlled indoor arenas, and expansive outdoor rings. Whether you’re an equestrian fan or just love grand, beautiful spaces, this place is truly impressive. The amenities here are top-notch, with luxurious accommodations, fine dining options, and even more exciting events taking place throughout the year.
To end the day, we treated ourselves to a fantastic dinner at Stirrups, a southern steakhouse located within The Equestrian Hotel. The restaurant’s refined atmosphere made it the perfect place to unwind after a busy day. We were greeted with a view of the Grand Outdoor Arena, and the food was mouth-watering. We dined on prime steaks and seasonal Florida seafood, each bite more delicious than the last. The elegant setting and impeccable service made for a truly memorable dining experience. Just a heads-up, the restaurant has a business casual dress code, so be sure to dress accordingly. It’s the perfect date night.
Day 6: A Morning with Clydesdales in Ocala and a Relaxing Evening on Anna Maria Island
After breakfast, we made our way to Grandview Clydesdales Farm, about 20 minutes from Ocala. We were about to experience something unique—a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the most prestigious Clydesdale farms in the world. The farm was magical, and we were given an in-depth, 1.5 to 2-hour guided tour. The owners walked us through every stage of the Clydesdales’ lives, from the ultrasound of the mares for breeding to the birth of the foals and their eventual stardom in commercials or world championship events. The farm is home to some truly magnificent horses, and we were able to get up close and personal with these gentle giants. It was such an educational experience, and we loved hearing about the history and legacy of the Clydesdale breed. If you’ve ever wanted to get up close with these beautiful animals, this tour is a must-do. We learned so much, and the tour was absolutely fascinating from start to finish.
After our Clydesdale adventure, we headed south towards the Bradenton Area, where we were checking in to Hidden Cove, a holiday rental in Holmes Beach. This gorgeous 2-bedroom condo sits right on the Gulf of Mexico, and we couldn’t wait to settle in. As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted with breathtaking views of the beach. It’s the perfect home base for a relaxing stay. The condo is beautifully designed, offering a cosy yet luxurious feel with plenty of space to unwind after a day of exploring. We were already planning our evenings to spend some time soaking in the views and the calm of the Gulf.
We wrapped up our day with dinner at Chateau Anna Maria, a charming restaurant we couldn’t wait to try. This spot is a local gem, with French-inspired cuisine and a touch of Southern influence. Located on Anna Maria Island, it’s got a laid-back yet refined vibe that perfectly matches the area. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was just as good as we’d hoped. We went for a few seafood dishes—fresh, flavourful, and perfectly prepared—all while enjoying the view of the lake marina. Whether you’re in the mood for seafood, organic meats, or something else, you’ll find something to love here. It was the perfect end to our day, and we left with full stomachs and happy hearts.
Day 7: A Day on Anna Maria Island: Dolphin Tours, Crepes, and Delicious Dining
We kicked off our day with breakfast at La Creperie in Holmes Beach, a cosy French spot known for its mouth-watering sweet and savoury crêpes. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu offered a tempting array of options—from classic crêpes to homemade quiches and omelettes. We couldn’t resist trying both a savoury and a sweet crêpe and paired it with a delicious coffee. If you’re a fan of French cuisine, this place is definitely worth a visit. It’s the perfect way to start the day before heading out for some adventure.
After breakfast, we headed over to the Waterline Hotel, where we met the crew of AMI Dolphin Tours for an unforgettable boat tour. Before even boarding the boat, we had an incredible surprise—we spotted a mother and baby manatee playing in the waters! It was such a magical moment. The dolphin tour itself was just as special. As we cruised around the stunning waters of Anna Maria Island, we were lucky enough to see several dolphins. These playful creatures seem to be everywhere around here! The captain was friendly and knowledgeable, sharing fun facts about the local wildlife and ecosystem. The tour was a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement, and we loved being out on the water, surrounded by the natural beauty of the area. If you’re looking to see dolphins and other marine life up close, this is the way to do it!
After our dolphin tour, we were treated to lunch at Shore LBK, a stunning restaurant overlooking the water. What made this lunch especially fun was that the boat captain took us there by boat! The ride was smooth, and it felt like a mini adventure before even sitting down to eat. The seafood was fresh and flavourful, with a menu full of coastal favourites and the views were perfect. After enjoying a leisurely lunch, the captain brought us back to the Waterline Hotel, and we felt completely relaxed, satisfied, and ready for the rest of the day.
Post-lunch, we decided to take a stroll down Pine Avenue, known as the “Greenest Little Main Street in America.” It’s a quaint, charming street lined with unique shops, cafes, and boutiques. We spent some time browsing the local stores, picking up souvenirs, and soaking in the scenic views. If you visit, you absolutely must make time to take a photo in front of their famous “jail”—it’s a local landmark and a fun photo op! Pine Avenue has such a welcoming vibe, and it was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours after a busy morning. Whether you’re shopping or just enjoying the laid-back atmosphere, it’s worth a visit.
To round out the day, we dined at SALT Bar & Table, an upscale coastal restaurant in Bradenton Beach. From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by the chic, family-friendly vibe of the place. The food was incredible—a true representation of coastal culinary artistry. We enjoyed a variety of dishes, each more delicious than the last. The fresh ingredients and creative presentations made it clear that this restaurant takes pride in its offerings. Whether you’re sitting indoors or outdoors, the ambience is perfect for a relaxing dinner after a day of exploration.
Day 8: A Day of Delicious Eats, Beautiful Beaches, and Stunning Views on Anna Maria Island
We started the day with breakfast at Cheesecake Cutie, a beloved local gem in Holmes Beach that just won the Anna Maria Island Chamber of Commerce’s “Business of the Year 2024” award. It’s easy to see why! This cosy spot offers a range of gourmet breakfast options, from fresh coffee to indulgent treats. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the menu features everything from savoury breakfast options to sweet indulgences like their famous cheesecakes. We couldn’t resist trying a slice, and it did not disappoint—creamy, decadent, and just the right amount of sweetness to start the day on a high note.
After breakfast, we made our way to our Beach Suite, where lunch was provided by Graze Street AMI. This laid-back, beachy dining experience was perfect for the location, with a variety of fresh, locally inspired dishes. Graze Street is known for its fresh, creative dishes, and the charcuterie box they delivered us didn’t disappoint, with delicious artisan cheeses and meats. Whether you’re looking for light bites or a full meal, this beachside dining experience is ideal for anyone looking to enjoy delicious food with a view. Relaxing in our Beach Suite while indulging in such tasty food made for a perfect afternoon break. Beach Suites is a very unique concept, it offers a luxury rental service for beach chairs, umbrellas and cabanas. We hired a cabana and it came with so many added extras such as games (Jenga was great fun), towels, sunscreen, speaker, a paddle board set and so much more. They set it up and take it down and take care of everything. You just turn up, relax and have fun on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Later in the afternoon, we headed to Bridge Street, a charming area full of shops, restaurants, and a vibrant nightlife scene. The pedestrian-friendly street is perfect for a leisurely stroll, offering plenty of opportunities to pick up unique souvenirs or simply enjoy the lively atmosphere. Whether you’re window shopping or enjoying a drink and bite to eat,, it’s a great spot to spend a few hours. As the sun began to set, the area took on a magical feel, with the energy picking up as people gathered for dinner or drinks.
To wrap up our day, we headed to Anna Maria Oyster Bar on the Pier for dinner. The location alone is a dream—offering 180-degree panoramic views of the intercoastal waterway. It’s hard to beat dining with the sea breeze in your hair and the stunning sunset over the water. The menu, of course, focuses on fresh seafood, and we dove straight into perfectly prepared fish. Each bite was a reminder of the incredible flavours and fresh ingredients that Florida is known for. It was the perfect way to end an unforgettable day in Bradenton.
Day 9: A Perfect Farewell to Anna Maria Island and Bradenton: Breakfast, Culture, and Riverfront Views
We began our last day in Bradenton with a delicious breakfast at Anna Maria Beach Cafe. Located right on the heart of Holmes Beach, it was the perfect spot to enjoy the morning breeze and the sound of waves crashing on the shore. The best part? The all-you-can-eat pancakes! Soft, fluffy, and topped with syrup—it was the perfect indulgence to fuel us for the day ahead with our toes in the sand.
After breakfast, we couldn’t resist stopping for photos at Bean Point, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Then on our with the iconic Anna Maria Island wooden sign. It’s one of those quintessential locations that captures the essence of the island’s charm. The sign is the perfect backdrop for memories, and we made sure to snap a few photos to remember our time on the island.
No trip to Anna Maria Island is complete without a visit to The Shake Pit in Bradenton. Luke has been coming here since he was a child, and we were lucky to visit once on our honeymoon. This retro American diner holds special memories for us, and we couldn’t resist stopping for one of its incredible thick milkshakes. The nostalgia was real, and the milkshake? Absolutely delicious—a must-try when you’re in the area!
Next, we headed to Downtown Bradenton, where we discovered the perfect blend of culture and fun. The area was vibrant, with a mix of charming shops, galleries, and beautiful scenery. The picturesque Riverwalk along the Manatee River provided the ideal backdrop for a relaxing stroll, and we made sure to stop by local shops like Pink & Navy (who also have a branch at Pine Avenue) and The Stoked Flamingo, where we found some unique treasures to bring home. The downtown area is small but full of life, with plenty to see and do for all ages.
At The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, we were able to enjoy a diverse range of exhibits and experiences that really brought the local culture and wildlife to life. From The Planetarium offering an out-of-this-world experience to the Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat, a second stage rehabilitation centre that gives manatees the care and independence they need before being released back into the wild , where we learned about the region’s iconic marine life, there was something exciting for everyone. The Mosaic Backyard Universe was particularly fun, with interactive exhibits that showcased Florida’s natural beauty. The museum’s constantly changing line-up of temporary exhibitions ensured we were discovering something new every time we turned a corner.
For lunch, we dined at Oak and Stone, nestled in the heart of downtown Bradenton. This restaurant offered a unique dining experience with an open kitchen and a self-serve beer wall, a very cool concept! You get to choose and pour your own beer, which made for a fun and interactive lunch. We sat on the rooftop dining area, which boasted stunning views of the Manatee River and west coast sunsets. The laid-back vibe and delicious food made it a fantastic spot to relax and soak in the beautiful Florida surroundings one last time.
From the thrill of space exploration to the quiet serenity of Gulf Coast beaches, these locations in Florida showed us a whole new side to the Sunshine State. It’s safe to say, we’ve only scratched the surface, and we’re already planning our next adventure back!
